Welcome from Richard Pulse
President & CEO of Kendall & Davis
We at K & D have a simple Mission Statement: We will serve our customers
by providing the talent that bring the solutions Information Technology managers
need to accomplish more at less cost. We have proven this time and time again
for well over two decades. Some of you may recall IBM’s 360’s;
we were there when companies began to migrate to multiple virtual storage (MVS).
IBM 370’s could run more than one program simultaneously. Revolutionary!
Decentralization, centralization, distributive processing, scalability.
We were there. System S3x’s to AS400, Middleware, PC proliferation, Network
storage. We were there too. Kendall & Davis has served virtually every
Fortune 2000 company in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, along with Fortune 500
companies from Palo Alto, California to Long Island, New York. No matter
what the Information Technology project is, we can provide reference after
reference
of successfully supplying IT management their most important resource.
Every "revolution" is fueled by new technology. Technology is
only as good as the people who wield it. We provide the professionals who
know how
to make it happen for you.
Culture: In the 1980’s managers began to be aware of the performance-culture
link. Much was said and written on this topic. Students were born around "the
truth" that service and performance are tied to the cultural "attitude" management
insisted upon, culled to and built within their organizations. It’s
a top down not a bottom up dynamic.
Today, the top down is ethics. Courses are offered and workshops conducted
on "Business Ethics". The scandals of late are a sad testimonial
to the lack thereof. Ethics are not what you avow but what you allow, support
and contribute to. Ethics are a code of conduct, a course of action. At Kendall & Davis,
we value people. The relationship with, the reputation built between, and
the non-exploitation of the community we are a part of. We strive for excellence
in everything we do. We are conscientious and principled in our approach
to
your solution. We will honorably do whatever is necessary to insure a win-win
for all. You can count on us to do what we say we will do when we say we
will do it.
The New Wave; Today the major challenge is "leveraging data" across
multiple domains and reducing the tremendous cost of applications maintenance.
What’s the right approach? To wait until knowledge is universal across
the marketplace means loss of market share; someone has already done it.
Your competitors are already there, serving your customer. Not good in the
competitive
global economy we live in today.
True, the bleeding edge is costly, but you do not have to pay the high
price that your competitors have. That’s competitive advantage.
The Advantage: We provide consulting, contracting and direct hire services
to the management community. We provide experienced expertise IT managers need
to accomplish their obligatory missions. Why pay more than you have to?
Who is paying for those big advertising campaigns, the huge infrastructure,
the feeling of security? Does it really make sense to pay top dollar for
every aspect of an IT challenge? Not to say the giant providers don’t
have a place. However, why not get twice as much done for the same dollar
investment
where you can? Unbundle your cost!
Services:
Consulting services: Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), Inter Enterprise
Integration (IEI), Object Oriented Development (OOD), Model Driven Architecture
(MDA) are just a few of the emerging standards. The benefits sound good!
Historical project development cost ratios are that for every one-dollar
($1) in design cost, you spend five dollars ($5) in development and ten dollars
($10) in maintenance cost. The new tools available cut this ratio to $1:$3:$5.
Significant! One of our MDA specialists took a 20-man team, 12-month project
life cycle to go "live" project plan, to an actual 4-month, 7-man
design team and a one-month 7-man implementation team. That is an 85% savings!!!
What could your Return on Investment (ROI) be? How soon could payback begin?
How long before it pays for itself? We can provide who, what, where, when,
why and how advice as well as the experienced manpower to do it.
New products evaluation: Your vendors say you need to spend more money. An
unbiased third party evaluation can set your mind at ease. You may see several
separate vendors on the same topic. You will notice the difficulty you experience
in getting the vendors to "talk" apples to apples. Can you expect
an IBM representative to tell you the benefits of HP or is it really a series
of questions that lead you to their product? What are "all" the questions?
Then there’s the cost vs. return on investment issues (ROI), ramp up
time, technical human resource acclimation, training, and acquisition challenges,
implementation approach, and unforeseen land mines; a real "salad" to
work with. How many "scrapped" $5 million lost projects have you
heard of? Far too many I think! You are faced with apples to oranges purposely!
Kendall & Davis can provide you an expert who has worked with the solutions
your vendors are offering. Vendors are deeply schooled in how to sell their
product but which one is right for you? Are you buying too much? Do you really
need all of that? Are the numbers real? One of our experts will evaluate your
situation based on your needs. There is much to gain from others’ mistakes.
Security evaluation: The old corporate mantra was "Maximization".
After September 11th, 2001 the new mantra is "Minimize risk." Security
is paramount in today’s changing world. “What would happen if ..…”? “Could
we withstand a ..…”? What other scenarios could evolve from an
internal or external terrorist act? What is the financial risk of your entire
IT operation if it’s compromised by security breaches? Why wait? Would
it give you, your colleagues and your board of directors comfort to know that
the questions have already been asked, the answers found and a plan put in
place? We can help you fulfill your fiduciary responsibilities as well as provide
peace of mind for all.
Architectural Evaluation: Along with the Y2K challenge came all the emerging
technologies, applications development in compatible and non-compatible silos
as well as New Business Systems in most departments. Every IT entity is full
of redundancy. This misspent budget could be applied to productivity.
Our specialized consultant’s "White Paper" report will tell
you where to start and what gains can be made in as little as two (2) day’s
time. Money well spent!
Today, every IT manager is faced with finding money. What better way than
the quick return of eliminating redundancy?
High-cost maintenance systems:
Systems generally fall into two (2) categories: those that never or rarely
change and those that change continuously. Many of our clients are attacking
cost by reducing maintenance. It’s what the new development standards
are about. First question: What are and how many of these systems exist in
my environment and what is the cost involved in ciphering the artistic design
of the original system to be able to do the maintenance?
Second question: If I change one aspect of a system, how many other changes
must be made to maintain continuity? The highest cost should be eliminated
first.
Third question: If I choose to re-deploy, do I do it with J2EE or .net standards?
What’s right for me? In a matter of days our consultant(s) can provide
you a report that will clarify where and how to approach your dilemma.
Whether you choose now or later, maintenance cost reduction is a task all managers
are going to be faced with.
Contracting services:
Kendall & Davis provides contracting services to companies that wish
to stay in control of their projects through custom-built teams or to organizations
that prefer results-oriented outsourcing. We can serve as a time and material
or fixed price provider.
Project managers:
Most organizations’ project managers are technical or administrative.
It’s rare to find an organization that has had the wherewithal to develop
and retain project managers with both skill sets. We will provide project
managers with experience in your industry that have successfully completed
similar projects
utilizing your technology.
Technical and/or administrative leadership, quick ramp up time with your
teams’ polity
in mind, from B2B to conversions, we have the skills you need.
Development teams:
If you elect the new standards of Object Oriented Development (OOD), Corba,
UML, to re-deploy or patch with XML or new development using traditional technologies
like DB2/Cobol, Oracle/PL/SQL or Access/Visual Basic, we can provide one to
twenty-five highly talented technicians capable of full project life cycle
support.
Direct Hire: No one in the Midwest has the unique experience Kendall & Davis
can bring to your Direct Hire process. Hundreds of satisfied customers can
attest to the thoroughness and commitment we bring to the recruiting and placement
process. Our clients enjoy a 2:1 ratio of interview to hire. Our methodologies
also insure over 90% of IT HR acquisitions are local to the customer we are
serving. Fee paid, IT HR retention is important to us too. We know you need
return for those hard earned fee budget dollars. We unconditionally guarantee
every hire. The average tenure of a top IT professional is about 3 years. If
you do not receive at least 3-years of return on your fee investment, let us
know and we’ll make it right.
By working with hiring mangers in the applicant selection process we can
provide the right person for your organization. Kendall & Davis utilizes the Frederick
Herzberg "One more time How do you Motivate Employees" methodology
while working with hiring managers. This is a reality-based and refreshing
way to approach the recruiting and acquisition process. Attracting top talent
is our expertise. No matter what the technology, no matter what the skill
set you may need, we deliver!
Commitment: I can’t say we are a great deal different then our competing
Human Resource providers in some ways. We have highly trained Account Executives
and recruiting teams like most other providers. There are a few dissimilarities
however. The first and foremost difference is our attitude.
The customer is King. Service is our commitment. Fortunately, Kendall & Davis
is a privately held corporation. Why fortunately? We do not have to spend
valuable time talking about what Wall Street thinks of our balance sheet.
There is no
pressure to figure out how to put large profits ahead of service, to make
our stock more attractive than another. We can be much more flexible. Service
smarter!
Service faster! Service more! Service better !
I can say unequivocally that service is a much more enjoyable topic to round
table. We are prepared to re-earn our customers’ loyalty with every
business transaction conducted.
Client Support: Information Technology Liaisons (ITL). Our clients’ primary
interface is an ITL. A technical professional with years of experience in our
clients’ industry. In most instances, the ITL has been responsible
for the same results our client manager now holds. The ITL/client manager
interface
is for an effective relationship with our client. Our ITLs have been there
and done that. It is from a peer to peer perspective, a professional understanding,
that comfort arises in the service process. We understand all the consequences
every decision-maker faces. Our ITLs can not only talk the talk they can
walk the walk.
Contractor Support: ITLs support our contractors and consultants in much
the same way: from a position of understanding. The ITL role bridges the
trilogy of client manager-contractor-outsource provider. That bridge is communication.
Most think of communications as downwards. World-renowned management consultant
Peter Drucker expresses that "True productivity by the knowledge worker
of today comes from the focus on contribution and the side to side communications
between and among knowledge workers. If the objectives are clear and the
knowledge worker well informed, this focus and the side to side communications
are where
productivity gains are greatest."
If needed, the ITL can flesh out the project plan, interface with the project
planner, project manager or the user community and communicate to the knowledge
worker the objectives in a continuous dialoguing process. The ITL can encourage
side to side communication to identify roadblocks or risks and keep management
informed. "Risk Assessment" and "Works-in-Process" reports
can be provided. An ITL comes with every assignment that Kendall & Davis
has an opportunity on which to serve.
Information Technology Consultant (ITC): A paycheck does appease the first
two basics of Maslow’s "Hierarchy of Needs." However, securing
food and shelter does not guarantee the person is self-motivated. True, the
person will "show-up". What I’m talking about is the difference
between good or acceptable and great.
You’ve seen it, that contractor who is exemplary. What made that person
different? The truth of the matter is that the right ITC in the right job shines!
93% of our contractors are extended while 5% are converted to direct hires.
As of late, the numbers of conversions are rising. The conversion parties know
each other well. A fail-safe win-win for all. We spend a lot of time making
sure the individual assignments are right for everyone. The retention, renewal
and conversion of our contractors demonstrate that commitment. We know that
true motivation comes from the recognition received, the responsibilities charged
and accepted, the achievement of getting it done well, the growth of the learning
mind applying everything it has to offer and the joy of the work itself. Pride
of ownership in accepting a challenging task is so much better for the client
and the ITC. Paychecks don’t motivate.
Self-motivation is a fundamental of top performance. Skills, abilities, professional
and business experiences are only part of the equation.
Human Resource Liaisons (HRL): Every company has a human resource department.
Unfortunately, in most companies, the HR department is viewed as a cost center.
Our HRLs are caregivers to our contract community. The HRL’s job is to
support the Information Technology Consultants, removing every obstacle possible,
allowing our ITCs to focus on our client’s mission. Be it assignment
acclimation, benefits issues, transitioning in and out of an assignment, logistical
support, HRL’s are there to support our customers through their active
roll with the ITC’s.
The removal of distress adds gains to productivity, which benefits the customer.
Our HRLs are an asset and of value to our contractors too. Hundreds of IT
contractor relationships have been nurtured in these ways over the years.
When our clients
call, an army of the "very best " steps forward.
Human Resource Consultants (HRC): Headhunters, recruiters, whatever the nomenclature,
our staff of highly motivated, well trained HRCs find the talent that possess
the business, professional and technical abilities that fit your specific
need. They also insure that the attitude of the referral matches your unique
requirement.
Our HRCs have the opportunity to work in our proprietary database of 65,000
IT Professionals, including about 10,000 managers. We communicate with our
community via e-mail, bulletins and of course 200 to 250 in-depth technical
and career-oriented discussions monthly via telephone. We stay in constant
communication with our marketplace. How many other organizations do you know
that initiate over 15,000 phone calls a month within Indiana, Michigan and
Ohio? The very best talent our region can produce resides in the schemes
and sub schemes of this database. If you are tired of the Hot Job or Monster
recruiters’ “beat
the clock" approaches and would like to see a unique applicant pool of
Midwest IT professionals in addition to harnessing applicant/job boards think
Kendall & Davis.
Hallmarks: Time is a cost. The bottom line result is the credo. Business
manages these relationships. The better use of existing time is paramount to
greater incremental degrees of success. We invite you to take advantage of
the cost to result ratios you should be enjoying by working with Kendall & Davis.
