What is the data in Cognos Cubes that matches the datawarehouse using Cognos Event Studio? Verify data in the DW matches the staging environment. You will learn Dataflux (SAS product) that is very sophisticated that has hooks to dig into the database in a SAS based language. So far they built a prototype in Cognos Event Studio to verify data in cubes and Datawarehouse – big issue right now. Data labeling is an issue in the Datawarehouse. They also want to get into Householding with custom algorithms in Dataflux based on household data not just customer data. This position is part of the Enterprise Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence team, where you will join two other SQL Server DBA’s. Just two months ago this team started building the Enterprise Data Warehouse, which is expected to take at least 2 years to complete, making this a ground floor opportunity. This team is in the process of building a centralized data repository from data on legacy systems (AS400) to create an enterprise view of the data so it can be used for multiple functions (marketing, product info, finance, sales, inventory, etc.). There are currently approximately 80 silos of data that will be brought into the centralized repository. There is also a datawarehouse environment on DB2/UDB that contains several data marts for marketing and HR. Because of the size of the staff and number of projects, all of the DBA’s perform the design/architecture, logical and physical definition and data modeling in both the test and production environments. The production environment that the EDM team supports consists of DB2/UDB (18 db’s, 15 servers), DB2/zOS (48 db’s, 4 servers), Oracle (24 db’s, 8 servers), and SQL Server (443 db’s, 116 servers). As the Datawarehouse Developer you will join a team of two on the Datawarehouse team. You will look at the process they have now and shed light on the ETL standards. They are in survival mode now and need solid standards to become more scalable and flexible to manage the rapid growth they are experiencing. The Datawarehouse is collecting three gigs of data per day and is currently at two TB. You will make a difference by guiding the team in Ralph Kimball design methodology and Informatica ETL standards Informatica Power Center is new to this environment. This is a unique environment that has SQL Server Replication hooked to Informatica Power Exchange that watches for any new data collected from their web-based Price Quoting Engine to hand off to Informatica Power Center to be transformed and written out to the target in Oracle. They currently have over 30 Data Marts using Form Dimensions. There are 7-8 Data Marts that need developed now for reconciliation, commission, A/P, G/L. These systems are tied into 17 different customers, credit agencies, Axiom, etc. to deliver real-time pricing information every 5 seconds. 70-80% ND using the Ralph Kimball methodology. This environment’s DW is growing three GB’s every day! They currently have 40 cubes in production, 12 of those are pointing at the EDW. 28 cubes need to be re-written since they are pulling from a set of denormalized tables. They must re-design those cubes to pull from the EDW. New cubes are requested every day. You must have experience with Cognos Access Manager to apply dimensional views using Apexing and Cloaking. They have over 400 accounts and don’t create a cube for each individual customer. So you must have skills with Access Manager to restrict views so customers can only see their data in a cube that also contains competitor data. Also know Framework Manager. The DW consists of SQL Server DM’s, Oracle for EDW using the Ralph Kimball Star Schema approach. They are converting ETL from DTS to Informatica Power Center/Exchange. Data is in real-time every 5 seconds. You will be doing every step in incremental builds: Identify Dimension Model. Write your own queries and macros. Apply security. Elevate to test. Production. Admin of cubes/boxes. Increase build speed. Must have Cognos 7.3-8.1 Access Manager (Apexing and Cloaking). Partitioning is needed where one table is over 500 GIG and another table has over 500 million rows of data that causes a tremendous performance impact during the day when they run a statistics report. Remote Replication – currently they have CDP for short term stand by servers to perform Log Shipping. They are planning a second-site for Disaster Recovery out West to have Replication of data. This team also manages the Storage Area Network. They just purchased two EMC Clarion CX500 boxes. You will also be exposed to Oracle 9i going to 10g where they have a Rac Cluster on their CRM system. Currently the SQL Server production environment is Clustered, but the test, development, QA, and staging is not Clustered yet. 30-40% Logical, 60-70% Physical. Currently Enterprise Data is delivered by Point-To-Point that has caused an unmanageable amount of interfaces where the data consumers interpret data inconsistently, redundant cost to build and maintain legacy ETL, no common dimensions for Data Access Services, inconsistent database design, no way to measure data quality. The goal is to lead change to use and see the value of an Integrated Data Environment where the data consumer can get info from data sources through the Enterprise Data Warehouse that will deliver a consistent and manageable view of information, thus eliminating the "Hair-Ball" effect of the Point-To-Point interface madness. Currently there are 35 Data Sources consumed from 7 different lines of business that feed 253 Data Publishing sources. The biggest is around 250 gig and the smallest is 25 gig, which is the B/I web server. Cube development is done with data beacon-OLAP cubes. The reporting tool is Crystal Reports using Excel spread sheets. The front-end of static reporting is VB scripting – Access – VB.6.0-Visual Studio. You will also be creating Stored Procedures, DTS, queries, and creating tables. No installs, upgrades and patches. Communication skills are critical to this position. You will be working directly with the users. The manager describes this part of the position as a combination of a P/A and B/A, doing requirements gathering and design testing and coding. This is Full Life Cycle development. 80% Data mining and reporting, 20 % documentation. As an overall high level view this position will be 70% technical and 30% user interface.
